How to prepare for your family session

Families, Tips & Tricks

As a parent, I know how stressful it can be to try to wrangle your crew into a car, dressed to the nines, missing nap time or snack time or play time, in order to make it to your family session and force your children to take photos. Sounds miserable, right?

Family sessions do not and SHOULD not be painful and a struggle! My job is to make sure you and your family have a fun, stress free time at your session so we can capture all the beautiful chaotic magic that is this time in your lives. In order to do that, I’ve complied a few tips and tricks to help you prepare yourself and your littles for your upcoming session.

What to expect

We’ll start your session by playing a bit and getting to know one another. I have some fun games and prompts that will help your littles warm up, but you know your children best, so I’ll have you interacting and playing together so your littles get comfortable and have fun. Your kids will be the directors of the shoot, so if they need a break or a rest, we’ll take one!

What to bring

  • A favorite toy, stuffy, noise maker, or anything that your little loves and will bring them comfort if needed
  • A neutral blanket to sit on if you don’t want to sit in the grass
  • A snack, water or bottle in case your little one gets hungry and needs a break
  • Layers that look good with your outfits in case it gets chilly

Tips on prepping your kids (and yourselves!)

I’ve found that parents have a better session when they’ve talked about what we’re going to do so the kids aren’t bombarded with a stranger with a camera right off the bat. Go through my website with your kids and partner the night before and talk about what you’re going to do the next day so they know what to expect.

At the end of the day, your kid is going to be a kid, so if they aren’t behaving perfectly or just want to climb the tree, we’ll let them! Those can be the best moments to capture because they perfectly show how your kid is at this stage in life. We WILL get the cute, smiling, sweet moments together, but if you set your expectations too high you for the perfect shoot, you could be setting yourself and your family up for a frustrating afternoon. I can work through any tantrum or shy personality to unearth the sweet, loving relationships you have with each other, so don’t worry about that part, I’ve got you!
